They started things off with a cinematic reveal trailer that has a bunch of people on the YouTube comment section yelling “Downgrade!” and then they followed it up with a character introduction trailer that doesn’t really introduce us to the new main character, Marcus Halloway. The game will have various factions that players will interact with, from the corporate overlords to the gangs in the underground, players will have to traverse their way with hacking through the interconnected network of a totem pole of villains as they attempt to take down ctOS 2.0.
Watch Dogs 2 will allow players to play the game either stealthily using hacks and avoiding killing anyone, or they can go in guns-a-blazing, picking up weapons and using guns as much as you want. The videos also tease being able to 3D print weapons, which has become a real thing these days, so players get to build their own weapons and craft both lethal and non-lethal weapons alike. They discuss this briefly in the world premiere video you can check out below, which clocks in at 18 minutes.
One of the really cool upgrades in Watch Dogs 2 over the original one is the melee combat. They gave Marcus a billiard ball attached to a cord, and they have him using it like a ghetto made nunchuck. I wasn’t really keen on them making the protagonist younger, but the fighting at least looks pretty cool.
They also wanted the city to feel alive outside of the player actions; autonomous actions from the NPCs going about their day without the player’s interactions being required to see things happen.
And speaking of the open-world, it’s possible to hack anything, from vehicles and phones to other characters and city infrastructure devices.
It seems cool to be able to hack so much stuff, but at the same time if everything in this sandbox is preset and setup to be scripted, like putting a remote control car on a hamster wheel and telling players they can use the car in any way that they want, even though it’s stuck on a darn hamster wheel.
Another thing they’ve focused on is adding a lot more vehicles to the game and revamping the physics to add more vehicle types and more handling properties to make the game feel more dynamic, as opposed to the original Watch Dogs.
The seamless, integrated multiplayer is also making a return, this time with the ability to just walk up to someone and do some co-op stuff with them, or setup sessions similar to GTA Online.
According to Dominic Guay, the senior producer at Ubisoft Montreal, they wanted to take everything from the first game and then expand it in a multifold way, saying…
“In Watch_Dogs 2, we’re excited to give players a captivating storyline with engaging characters that offers deeper, more meaningful hacking options, a greater variety of gadgets and weapons and a brand new seamless multiplayer experience that will appeal to fans of the original Watch_Dogs as well as players new to the brand.”
Watch Dogs 2 will be featured and demoed during Ubisoft’s E3 2016 press conference, but a lot of the game is detailed well enough in the featurette video, so I’m not sure what else they could show off that they didn’t already in the 18 minute dev doc above?
