Resident Evil 7 Teaser ‘Kitchen’ Demo Downloaded 2 Million Times

Capcom has revealed that the demo for Resident Evil 7, dubbed “Kitchen”, has turned out to be way more popular than most people could have imagined. Released during this year’s E3, the teaser demo was made available for the PlayStation 4 and was also demonstrated live at E3 on the PlayStation VR headset, and to date it has managed to rack up more than 2 million downloads.

Capcom sent out a press release letting the world know that the short demo that first aired at E3 has been one of the most popular downloads on the PlayStation 4. The demo clocks in at approximately 30 minutes, first following someone trying to get out of the mansion, and then it switches over to a film crew moving through an abandoned mansion. The demo takes a turn when the film crew enters the house and the producer, Andre, ends up going missing shortly after they get inside. The snivel-nosed host takes the lead as they search for the producer in the abandoned house.

They uncover some secrets and deal with a few of the hidden horrors of the supposedly abandoned house.

The demo was designed to show off the power of the PlayStation VR, but it also had the averse effect of causing some people at the E3 booth some serious motion sickness due to the inconsistent frame-rate that dipped below 60fps on occasion.

VR apps are supposed to run at 120fps for a comfortable user experience.

Capcom has up until January 24th, 2017 to sort out Resident Evil 7′s frame-rate issues. Will they be able to do so over the course of the next six months? Hopefully… for the sake of everyone who buys a PSVR.

The first-person horror title will be available on PC, Xbox One and PS4. There will be PlayStation VR support at launch as well. I suspect Oculus Rift and HTC Vive owners should be able to get in on the VR action, too. The “Kitchen” demo was only made available for PS4 owners, but maybe Capcom will release something to satiate the appetites of Xbox and PC gamers ahead of the January release?

    I… Dont want to play outlast, all indie horror games look like this why would I need another ?

    i just want a proper sequel to resident evil 4 with the focus on survival instead of multiplayer, cut scenes and punching boulders

      They said the actual RE7 will just be the usual RE7. Which makes you wonder why they even bothered with this to begin with.

      I can already tell RE7 will be very polarising. Some people will be glad if it’s the usual recent CoD style shooter stuff, others will be very disappointed that it’s not like the demo, and yet more people will be upset that it’s not classic survival horror.

      The stupidest thing is that at one point, they used to differentiate between the main series (survival horror) and the shooting-based alternatives (Umbrella Chronicles, Gun Survivor, etc). Why mix the genres into the main series and alienate people?

      I’ll never forget when Capcom justified the shitty rush to end Wesker’s story in RE5 because they wanted to “reboot the series”. Where the hell is this “reboot”? We’ve seen nothing but half-assed attempts to drag the franchise further through the mud.

        I remember you mentioned this before, you are the only one I’ve read saying this tho, everyone (understandably) seems to be expecting more of the demo, do you have a source ?

        I wouldn’t put it past capcom, it would be quite the disaster, I imagine both pro demo and anti demo flipping their shit

          Interesting. I looked it up, and it seems there was some confusion about it.

          This is what was pasted to me originally:

          Note that the last line about the full game being Resident Evil we know, is missing from that article. I recall seeing that same line somewhere, not sure if it was IGN. If it was originally in that article, then I guess they retracted it quietly. A mistranslation? Bad wording?

          The articles that show up on search now seem to say that the demo won’t be in the full game, but they don’t say the full game will be different. They don’t say that it will be “like the Resident Evil we know and love”.

            We were really happy with the way that Resident Evil feels in first person.

            That line makes me cringe for some reason

            the key pillars of the game are fear and horror, exploration of the
            environment, puzzle-solving elements, resource management, and combat
            against enemies. Those are all in this game, but we wanted to start off
            with the first two – horror and exploration – and get you experiencing
            those two pillars up front.

            That sounds like PR speech for “we are dropping everything but horror and exploration, the rest are afterthoughts”
            Since when horror was a key pillar of RE ? since the first game the game has been more funny than scary, it uses horror elements for background decoration, the tension comes from the survival part

            You wonder if this person you’re playing as – or you – will be able to
            cope with this situation. That’s a real feeling of helplessness that
            helps the horror stand out. If you try the demo that’s out on
            [PlayStation 4] for [PlayStation Plus subscribers], you’ll see.

            Is there ever a concern that the development team could make Resident Evil 7 too scary?

            I’ve seen from initial reactions of what we’ve put out that people are
            getting the impression that we’ve taken Resident Evil and turned it into
            some sort of supernatural, occult, ghost story. I think you can look at
            the trailer or the demo and get that impression, but don’t worry, we
            haven’t just thrown out Resident Evil as it exists and turned it into a
            ghost story. It will all make sense in the end.

            Fewer But More Meaningful Enemies

            To be honest, I’m not really interested in RE7 either. The Resident Evil franchise is long dead to me. Stick around a few more years for RE11, which will probably have hoverboard gameplay and mind-reading.

    I watched a few different Japanese playthroughs, and it generally seemed like everyone thought this would be part of the actual game. Not a fan of how confusing that’s become. Capcom officially said otherwise, but there’s nothing in-game implying that. Also personally think P.T. was more creepy-looking. Haven’t played it myself because Konami took it down, though. Assholes.

    • Yep, P.T. takes a big fat dump all over this demo. The Fox Engine really couldn’t have been showcased in a better way than with that demo.

      In this particular case you can very easily see where the graphics have been scaled back to accommodate the PS4 running this game on PSVR. The hair and character models in particular are fairly low quality compared to what they should be for a 2016 game. The only saving grace is the smooth character animations.

      Pt was far better at subtlety, re7 restricts you with obvious transparent walls and the stupid ghost they added is so badly implemented almost nobody noticed it
