Metal Gear Survive Gets Trashed By Gamers For Being A Cash-In Game

Why are gamers currently hating on the recently announced Metal Gear Survive by Konami? Well, there are a couple of reasons. First, it isn’t made by the series’ creator Hideo Kojima. Second, it’s already shaping up to be a zombie survival game not unlike Capcom’s Operation Raccoon City or Umbrella Corps/ And thirdly, gamers have not forgiven Konami for firing Kojima and shutting down Kojima Productions.

IGN posted up the GamesCom 2016 reveal trailer for Metal Gear Survival and it wasn’t received well at all. It’s already racking up downvotes just as quickly as Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare’s announce trailer.

You can see the trailer for yourself and what has so many people up in arms about the game.

Some people tried to argue that this spin-off game could be decent, and that it’s just like Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. However, others like Raiden Koizuma explained that Metal Gear Rising still had plenty of Kojima’s influence and style splashed across it and the theme of the game still fit within the Metal Gear universe, albeit exaggerated…

“That’s because it had the style and could still be recognized AS a MGS game. You give a fan of MGS the trailer to Rising without them knowing it’s rising or never even hearing about it and they’d know it’s Metal Gear. You give them this and they’d say it’s Resident Evil.”

It was the same for the people on Reddit as well, with users trying to draw comparisons to Metal Gear Rising but being shot down at every turn. Shb117 wrote…

“IDK about you but when I played MGS4, after watching all those Raiden cutscenes I thought to myself WOW I wish I could play as him.

“Revengeance gave me that chance! It brought some new stuff to 3rd person action games with the freecutting thing.

“This game however just makes me go “?!?what”

Some argued in the comment section that if Kojima had been attached to the project it wouldn’t receive so much hate, while others argued that departing from a working formula doesn’t always mean hate, but removing the creator from the project and turning Metal Gear into a co-op zombie survival game seems like a death knell, with TheScorpion0081 writing…

“Total overhauls of a franchise’s concept rarely end well. It probably would have been 50/50 split. Unless it was an entirely new IP with a different name AND had Kojima working on it. That would have sold like hotcakes with a complementary beeje. [sic]

“Oh well, more money for another game.”

The general gist of the Reddit gaming threads could be summed up with Jerk_of_All_Trades’ comment, which states…

“Yep, this is exactly how you earn me back, changing a stealth classic into a shitty zombie survival game that looks on par with those awful Umbrella Corps RE spinoffs that Capcom puts out. WHAT THE FUCK.”

The responses were the same across Twitter as well…

The YouTube, Twitter, Facebook and Reddit responses aren’t the only ones where people are expressing disappointment about the game. Over on the hardcore gaming forums, GameFaqs, there are tons of comments from lots of posters, and the best way to sum up their responses is with many users comparing it to the Resident Evil spin-off games and the Metroid Prime: Federation Force title for the 3DS. Pharsti01 writes…

“Can we please pretend this isnt happening and just never talk about this again?

“Not because its a Metal Gear without Kojima… id actually look forward to that… but simply because judging by the trailer? Its not Metal Gear game, its some s*** with the name attached (kinda like Federation Force).[sic]”

There are some people saying to give the game a chance; to stop hating on Konami; to wait for more info before blowing it off. Well, most of those people are being ignored or taken a textual lashing to from true fans of Metal Gear.

The early goings for Metal Gear Survive aren’t looking too good. If Konami actually has plans on making this a proper AAA experience then they’ll need to release a high-art trailer with a poignant song and some flashy, cryptic dialogue sequences if they want to win back what few remaining fans they have left.

According to an IGN article, the game takes place after the events of Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes and before Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. There may be some scavenging and the game is running on the Fox Engine. Konami European president Tomotada Tashiro mentioned in the press release…

“Metal Gear Survive will offer a fresh take on the series’ famed stealth elements,” “but within a unique co-op setting that is designed for a truly engrossing multiplayer experience.”

Based on the feedback so far, it doesn’t sound like gamers are too fond of this “fresh take”, which ironically is a retread of dozens of other first-person and third-person shooters that have come out in the past couple of years.
