Prey QuakeCon Trailer Features Shotguns, Pistols And Black Smoke

Bethesda and Arkane Studios let loose the newest in-engine trailer for Prey. It features some pan and scan shots of the environment, a few cinematics and a slight glimpse at the first-person gameplay.

The trailer doesn’t really dive as deep into the gameplay as some gamers have been hoping for, but it offers enough of a look at the content to at least get a slight feel for what the enemies and gunplay might be like. You can check out the minute and a half long QuakeCon trailer below.

I like the gun designs. The sort of contemporary look fits the themes well enough. It’s not far-future tech but it’s still sleek and functional. It reminds me a lot of the way the weapons were portrayed in the movie Outlander.

The lighting and the thematic tone of Prey looks like a sterilized version of Dishonored at times. There are a lot of clean lines and polished materials that we see on display. I imagine the developers will juxtapose the pristine architecture with a lot of disruption from the black smoke creatures throughout the game, possibly similar to how the lab in Half-Life became more and more destroyed as players ventured through it during the cross-dimensional breach.

In fact, some of the comments on the YouTube page said that they had a bit of a Half-Life vibe coming from the trailer while they watched it. I felt it seemed a little bit more like F.E.A.R. than Half-Life but they’re all about the same kind of peas in a pod when you really think about it.

There are also still the common complaints that the game doesn’t look as cool as the promotional CGI tech demo for Prey 2. Let’s be honest, a game like Prey 2 was never going to be what the fanboys wanted it to be because the tech at the time could not handle it. An open-world bounty hunter game set in a cyberpunk universe with state of the art visual effects? Pfft, we don’t even get that kind of content these days on the current gen systems, so there’s no way that was going to happen on the Xbox 360 and PS3.

Anyway, Prey is due for release on the Xbox One, PS4 and PC in 2017. Feel free to stick a trip to the official website to learn more.
