Batman: Return To Arkham Launches October 18th

The laterally improved re-release of Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City will be part of the Batman: Return To Arkham package come October 18th.

If you’re looking at the header image and wondering what’s up with that, it’s because of what was mentioned in the first paragraph: the remastered games have been laterally improved, with upgrades to the environment and lighting but downgrades to the characters and meshes.

Batman Arkham uploaded the recent video from Warner Bros., promoting the new release date for the delayed Batman: Return To Arkham, which was originally due to launch this July. I imagine the complaints about the downgrades from the PS3 to the PS4 and Xbox 360 to Xbox One saw Warner Bros., scrambling to up the fidelity before the game’s fall release.

It’s pretty funny because if you watch the video over on the official WB Games YouTube channel, they have the comments disabled. I mean, obviously that’s the best way to get people pumped for your content, right? Disabling comments and pretending like the criticisms don’t exist. It’s worked wonders for Feminist Frequency… they’ve managed to ride censorship all the way to the bank and from the bank to the U.N.

Anyway, Batman: Return to Arkham will include more than just character downgrades, it will also feature all of the previously released DLC for both Batman: Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City.

Some gamers were a little bummed that Batman: Arkham Origins wasn’t included in the bundle, but that’s because Rocksteady Games didn’t make that version of the game.

It’s kind of strange that they’re re-leasing a last-gen game that was already in HD and doing so with remarkably lower quality assets on some of the content. Yeah, the improved fog effects, the physically based rendering provided by the Unreal Engine 4 and the improved shadow optimizations all make for great looking screenshot bait, but outside of the environments, the lower anisotropic texture filtering and mesh details just makes the whole thing feel like a cheap cash-in.

According to Eurogamer the delay was due to port house Virtuous having trouble maintaining stable frame-rates on the new consoles. It’s no surprise given that the eighth gen twins have been the least impressive consoles in recent times due to how cheap Microsoft and Sony were with the GPU and CPU.

On the plus side, for people who never played the first two Batman: Arkham games you’ll be able to get your hands on them for $50 in the bundle starting next month on October 18th for the Xbox One and PS4.
