For Honor On PS4 Pro Runs At 1440p At 30fps, Only 1080p On PS4

Digital Foundry managed to get their hands on the beta version of For Honor on the PS4 Pro and run it through the pixel counting benchmark in order to do a comparison with the vanilla PS4. They found that the game runs at native 1440p at 30fps on the PS4 Pro and 1080p at 30fps on the standard PS4.

Digital Foundry showcases the frame-rate stability between both versions as well as some of the graphical differences in a quick four minute video that you can check out below.

It’s mentioned in the video that the higher resolution has also brought about clarity in the textures, which is likely equivalent to running 16x anisotropic filtering at 1080p.

One obvious question would be: Will people be able to natively see the texture resolution differences at 1440p on a 1080p monitor or television? Well, it depends on the settings of the television and where the sharpness notch sits. Obviously, though, if the anisotropic filtering is raised in addition to having a higher resolution set at 2560 x 1440, then the obvious answer is that yes you will most definitely see a difference in the texture resolution.

Ambient occlusion density has also been increased on the PS4 Pro, even if only ever-so-slightly.

It’s noted that For Honor runs locked at 30fps with no drops on the PS4 Pro, and runs fairly smooth at 30fps on the vanilla PS4 with occasional drops.

Personally, I would have preferred the game running at 60fps for the smoothest experience possible, but 1080p at 60fps on vanilla PS4 isn’t possible, and 1440p at 60fps seems like an equally tall order for the PS4 Pro. Remember, there’s a 1.6 megapixel difference between 1440p and 1080p, and that extra processing leap makes a world of difference in terms of rendering frames to the screen.

Additionally, a PS4 Pro running at 1080p and 60fps would have an astronomically distinct advantage over other players stuck on the vanilla PS4 running at only 30fps.

You can look for For Honor to launch on February 14th for PS4, PS4 Pro, PC and Xbox One. You can register now to join the open beta taking place between February 9th and February 12th by visiting the official website.
