Madden NFL 18 Switching To Frostbite Engine
(Last Updated On: February 1, 2017)

Electronic Arts is taking the Frostbite sitewide across the company. This means that they’re ditching the Ignite Engine being utilized by some of their legacy brands in the EA Sports division in order to make use of DICE’s Frostbite, even for the upcoming Madden NFL 18, due out later this year.

According to COG Connected the news went loose during the Q3 2017 earnings call for investors. EA stated to shareholders that they would be transitioning over to the new engine as they move forward with implementing the Frostbite into more of their properties, stating…

“Our Madden NFL franchise will transition to the Frostbite engine with Madden NFL 18, unlocking major visual advancements and new gameplay experiences that will excite dedicated Madden players, football fans, and sports fans overall.”

This could add a totally different feel to the next Madden NFL title, especially if they decide to really capitalize on the physics capabilities offered by the Frostbite.

We’ve seen the engine in use recently with other sports titles such as Rory Mcllroy PGA Tour and FIFA 17. The feedback hasn’t been vastly negative, so I’m guessing things went over decently enough.

They also have plans on plopping the Frostbite into the next NHL outing.

It’s a little tough to get too excited because the Frostbite has a ton of potential but feels as if it’s been squandered on a lot of subpar outings. Battlefield 1, while impressive, still has a lot of casualized features that strips away from some the gameplay appeal, such as no longer being able to land and take off in planes, or some of the larger levolution events being removed.

FIFA 17’s switch from Ignition to Frostbite was mainly utilitarian, and we didn’t see massive gains (or losses). We’ll see how well things go over with Madden NFL 18 when they inevitably debut some new footage at this year’s upcoming E3.
