Thief is a game series that was well received between 1998 to 2004. Folks could partake in stealthy missions in a strange dark city filled with Steam Punk themed decor and entities that were more than normal. Three years ago, Square Enix and Eidos Montreal released Thief (2014) and failed to meet gamers expectation as of said year, and now the devs seek to bring yet another Thief game to the market… but with a movie adaption, too.
According to a new report that was recently published, we learn that publication site GameInformer found that the company Straight Up Films is supposedly going to release a new film or movie adaptation alongside a fifth implementation of the Thief game series.
The publication site notes that Straight Up Films’ main website details the following about the film that is reportedly to come out in the near future:
“Thief is an action epic poised to be the next great multi-platform franchise. Originally released in 1998 by Eidos Interactive (Deus Ex) and distributed by Square Enix (Tomb Raider, Final Fantasy), the Thief series has spanned over fifteen years and four sequels continually retaining loyal audiences and attracting new fans with each iteration. Widely considered to be one of the greatest games ever created, a fifth sequel is currently in development to be released in step with this motion picture adaptation. Steeped in the steam-punk world created by the video game, the film will tell a new chapter in the storied world of the series’ hero.”
The action-adventure film is said to have Adam Mason and Simon Boyes as writers for the Thief film, who worked together on the movie Misconduct starring Josh Duhamel, Anthony Hopkins and Al Pacino — take that however you will.
I should note that both Square Enix and Eidos Montreal have not said a single thing regarding said film or game, so we will have to wait and see if publication site GameInformer is on to something with Straight Up Films seeking to start up a film alongside a new game.
To be honest here, assuming a new game does come out, if Thief (2014) is any indication to the upcoming iteration, the devs have failed once again. I wasn’t a huge fan of that particular game and I hope that if a sequel or another reboot happens to hit the gaming scene hopefully it offers much more in an intuitive way.
