Rune: Ragnarok Announced
Rune Ragnarok

Human Head Studios is back at it again. The developers may have had Prey shuffled out from underneath them as Bethesda reinvented it as some sort of System Shock and BioShock hybrid, but that didn’t stop them from taking their expertise elsewhere and creating a game called Rune: Ragnarok.

A new teaser trailer – just barely a minute long – was released to give gamers a look at the upcoming title from the former Prey 2 developers. You can check out the 56 second teaser below.

The Norse-themed game looks pretty intense as far as the in-engine visuals are concerned. The unfortunate part about it is that we already know the Xbox One and PS4 can’t do a lot of real-time volumetric fog effects, or real-time fire particle emitters as depicted in the trailer. So while we may have an idea as to what we can expect from Rune: Ragnarok from a visual targeting perspective, we should already temper expectations based on the limitations of the eighth-gen twins.

Anyway, the upcoming third-person hack-and-slash, Norse-themed RPG could be a nice rival to God of War if it’s done right proper.

It’s a long-awaited sequel to the 2000 outing Rune, which was one of the many third-person titles out back in the day that kind of slipped under the radar compared to some other games out back then. If you need a refresher course on the Unreal Engine 1-powered game, you can check it out below, courtesy of HeinRitske.

Man that game was so rough around the edges. That floaty movement that the older Unreal Engine games were known for did not age well at all.

Anyway, we’ll have to wait a while until we get more details and proper in-game footage of the upcoming sequel, Rune: Ragnarok. If you have a penchant for frustration you can always go back and play the original in order to catch up on the story, or you can just watch someone else play it on YouTube.
