Assassin’s Creed: Origins Live Action Trailer Tries To Portray A Diverse Egypt
Assassin's Creed Origins

Ubisoft’s latest promotional trailer for Assassin’s Creed: Origins ahead of its release is a live-action affair that focuses on Bayek’s voice-over talking about the rise of the Assassin order. More specifically, he talks about the methods they use being more than just a man, or a woman, or a single individual, and that it’s actually a creed.

The trailer features thoughtfully cognitive music, with a violin-piccolo offering an uneasy but progressive journey through the events that unfold from start to finish. The trailer starts showing Egypt during 49BC – where we see the decadence of the upper echelons of Egyptian society enjoying the spoils of the aristocracy. It doesn’t last for long… the seeds of dissent are laid bare as Bayek raps words of retribution for their inevitable descent.

Waxing poetics aside, the trailer does its darndest to show how “diverse” Egypt is. It’s something that caught the ire (and attention) of some of the commenters, who quickly devolved the conversation into the typical argument over the skin color of Egyptians 2,000 years ago.

Some argued that the trailer misrepresented Egypt, showcasing blacks as slaves and the whites as the empowered ones. Others still felt that the blacks being in the trailer put it in the “We Wuz Kangz” territory and continued to mock Ubisoft for the inclusion.

Race is still obviously a hot button topic for the game. On some of the other channels the commenters joked more about the fact that Ubisoft would downgrade the final game’s graphics from the realistic graphics to the in-game graphics.

Assassin’s Creed: Origins has been basked in controversy since its announcement. Surprisingly there hasn’t been much talk about the game’s loot boxes, but maybe that’s because so far Ubisoft have made no announcements about using real money to purchase a loot box. Once the game launches then maybe we’ll see how well they stick to that princple.
