Solar Sail Games and Curve Digital released a new trailer for their upcoming, hand-painted adventure game, Smoke And Sacrifice. The game is almost identical to Don’t Starve, except it focuses more on the action-oriented, hack-and-slash elements of isometric gaming as opposed to the minutiae of trying to focus strictly on the survival aspects.
The trailer lays out the basic gameplay, where we learn that players will take on the role of Sachi, a mother of a young boy who is sacrificed as part of a tribal ritual. However, things take a decidedly different turn when Sachi decides that her son being offered as a sacrifice wasn’t what she wanted, and she goes into the underground world after him. While underground she encounters an entirely new ecosystem of danger, with monsters and weird creatures living, breeding, mating, and killing galore.
The hand-painted backdrops are a mix between fantasy jungles and steampunk environments. Much like Don’t Starve, you’ll also have to keep the lights on to avoid becoming a victim of the things that go “chomp” in the night.
Tancred Dyke-Wells, Co-Founder of Solar Sail Games commented in the press release that after working on a bunch of a major mainstream games they decided to take on their own indie project with Smoke and Sacrifice, mentioning…
“We wanted to combine a meaningful narrative with the challenges of survival gameplay. Discovering ways to influence this creepy, organic world to your advantage is key to pursuing your ultimate quest.”
Now comes the time to talk frank…
It appears this yet another game that moves away from a typical male protagonist in order to continue the current trend we’ve seen in gaming in recent years where playing as a male character in today’s culture is seen as some kind of taboo. It doesn’t help that speeches at GDC basically encourage developers to turn away their own core audience.
Anyway, a lot of the games heavily themed on moving away from characters aimed at the core demographics haven’t been selling anywhere near as well as games that do. Ultimately this is because the people that social activists keep trying to orient their products toward don’t buy games.
We’ll see how well Smoke And Sacrifice does when it launches later this year for PC, PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch. For more info, you can visit the official website.
