Sony Removing PS3, PS Vita Games From PS Plus Line-Up Starting March 8th, 2019

During the announcement of the PS Plus games that would be made available throughout March for PlayStation owners, Sony tucked a second announcement into the post farther down at the bottom.

Niche Gamer spotted the blurb from the original PlayStation Blog posting, where SIE Europe’s content producer, Matthew Groizard, explained…

“We also have an important service update to share. Starting next year on 8th March 2019, the PS Plus monthly games line-up will focus on PS4 titles and no longer include PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita titles.

“This won’t affect any games you’ve already downloaded, or will download, prior to 8th March 2019. Those games will still be part of your PS Plus games library as long as you remain a member.”

So why did Sony decide to make this move? Because according to the company a majority of their subscribers are already playing on the PlayStation 4.

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Sony would be nullifying support for the ancient 12-year-old PS3 and the red-headed stepchild of gaming, the PS Vita. However, what is surprising is that Sony has decided to keep the price of admission for monthly access to PlayStation Plus the same.

So starting next March, you won’t only get fewer games as part of the monthly roll out but you’ll be paying a premium price for the multiplayer service. And even more than that, Sony will not be supplicating PS4 games in the absence of PS3 and PS Vita titles being removed from the PS Plus line-up. Sony confirmed to various outlets that there will be no additional games added to the PS Plus monthly line-up.

What this mean is that you’ll continue to get two PS4 games each month as part of your PS Plus subscription, but after March 8th, 2019 you won’t be receiving access to PS3 or PS Vita games.

And to address the elephant in the room: Yes, this means you’ll be paying more and getting less out of your PS Plus subscription.

Some fanboys — like the ones parodied in Duckhunter44’s video above — are still hanging onto the dried up, wrinkly, sagging teat of Sony, hoping that even the quality of the PS4 games will go up with each month’s PS Plus offerings starting in March of 2019.

If Sony hasn’t been increasing the quality of games in the face of Microsoft’s improved support of Games With Gold, and the massive success of the Nintendo Switch, it’s doubtful that they will take away four games from the PS Plus line-up but then increase the quality of output, especially when they could be doing that now.

Anyway, enjoy the free PS3 and PS Vita games for 2018 and the first two months of 2019 while they last.
