Evil Corporation Games, an indie outfit from out of Spain, announced that Terrorhythm (TRRT) is coming soon to Steam. The game is a music-rhythm beat-’em-up title based around rhythmically keeping in beat to the music while beating up the bad guys lunging at you on the screen. There’s a fine balance between maintaining concentration on the beat and not being overwhelmed by the enemies.
The game is set in the far future of the 25th century. The world has been taken over with a global authoritarian force that rules all. In their attempt to maintain control, they have isolated sound from all facets of life, muting the rhythm of life’s beats and silencing the vibrant hum of the existential notes that play throughout our lives.
There’s only one thing left to do: raise the volume and become the anthem of rebellion.
You’ll take on the role of a music maestro attempting to bring music back to the world, and break the chains of silence in order to unshackle the eardrums of the musically oppressed.
In a way, you can think of Terrorhythm as Jet Set Radio meets One Finger Death Punch.
The cyberpunk world works as a colorful backdrop to the intense musical battles taking place against the totalitarian forces. You can check out some of the gameplay with the teaser trailer below.
As depicted in the trailer, you can import your very own MP3s so that your custom music can work as the soundtrack for Terrorhythm.
The gameplay itself is played out using four buttons, either with the keyboard or gamepad. Evil Corporation Games also made it known that you can use a dancepad as well, if you still have one lying around somewhere.
The main character’s combat prowess is attached directly to the beat of the music, and it’s up to you to keep him in sync.
I do worry about the overall scope of the gameplay… it reminds me of a limited, beat-’em-up version of Riff Racer or Melody’s Escape.
If they can hammer out a solid bit of replayability beyond the basic gameplay loops currently available in Terrorhythm then I think they might have a sleeper hit on their hands.
