Outward, Open-World Split-Screen Survival RPG Heads To PC, PS4, XB1 In 2019

Nine Dots Studio and Deep Silver recently announced that a brand new fantasy game set in an open-world and featuring survival mechanics, single-player gameplay along with online and split-screen co-op, is set to release on February 12th, 2019 for the Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC. The name of the game is called Outward.

The announcement came via a livestream on Twitch.tv recently, where the basic gameplay was outline and the developers revealed that you’ll be able to play alone or with friends in the typical online multiplayer fashion, not unlike Funcom’s Conan Exiles. However, the real surprise here is that the game offers split-screen capabilities that you don’t oftentimes see in open-world RPGs. In fact, I can’t remember the last open-world RPG that sported split-screen features on the home consoles.

The game was actually originally unveiled two years ago back in 2016 with a demo video showing off an attack on a bandit camp, but it wasn’t until 2018 and a couple of months ago did the game really make a proper introduction courtesy of a Deep Silver trailer, which you can check out below.

Like most open-world survival games, it’s a large, procedurally generated world with different biomes, the ability to gather resources, camp, learn magical abilities, and fight against monsters. It’s all powered by the Unity 3D game engine.

The trailer really hammers home that the co-op will play a pretty big part in the gameplay and it was a smart marketing move because a lot of gamers in the comment section have noted that this is part of what they wanted out of an open-world game. I’m not sure why split-screen is such a difficult thing to implement over online play, but the cynical side of me believes that they do it in order to double-up on the sales.

Anyway, you can look for Outward to launch next year at the start of February. You can keep track of development by visiting the official Deep Silver website.
