Orcs Must Die! Unchained, Hero Academy Games Close Down April 8th, 2019

Robot Entertainment announced on January 7th, 2019 that Orcs Must Die! Unchained, Hero Academy and Hero Academy 2 will be closing down for PC and PS4.

The announcement came via a post over on the official website, where CEO Patrick Hudson rolled out the bad news, writing…

“Making and supporting a game is a long and challenging journey. Along the way, there are plenty of highs and plenty of lows. The communities who play our games join us on these journeys. We know this decision affects our players as much as it does us.

“We’ve kept these games operating at a financial loss for many months. Unfortunately, it’s no longer sustainable for us to do so. We must shift our focus to future games and make our investments there.”

In no uncertain terms it’s explained that the games are no longer profitable and that Robot Entertainment has to pull the plug.

According to Hudson, all three of the games will be shutting down effective April 8th, 2019 at UTC—05:00 on Monday.

After that you won’t be able to play the three aforementioned titles.

Effective immediately players will have an extra currency boost in the games to spend on items leading up to the closure this spring.

All of the player data and server information will be permanently deleted once April 8th hits. You will not be able to create a new account nor will you be able to download or re-download the game.

This is basically more of a look at what the all-digital future has in store for games that can’t maintain a profitable playerbase. While many publishers keep pushing for the games-as-a-live-service model over the traditional boxed or digital product sale, the reality is that online-based games don’t stick around forever and you’ll only be able to play them for as long as the server lights are online.
