The game received a new trailer highlighting the gameplay for some of the characters featured in the title, and it’s a heck of a lot more fleshed out than I thought it would be.
The game features fast-paced, tag-team action where teams of three will duke it out against opponents using a variety of combos, special moves, and tag-team attacks to win the fight. The gameplay reminds me a little bit of King of Fighters meets Marvel vs Capcom 3. You can see what it’s like with the gameplay trailer below, featuring the Red Ranger, the Black Ranger, the White Ranger, a couple of Ranger chicks, and even Goldar.
It looks like it takes the concept of Power Rangers: Legacy Wars that nWay developer for iOS and Android, but then evolves the fighting mechanics where the combos are a little longer, the super moves are integrated a bit more seamlessly, and the ability to call in Megazords to smash, stop, drill, and blast your opponents down are made to give the fights a wildcard feel.
While the fighting is definitely solid looking, I have to point out the giant elephant in the room: the graphics are not that great at all. The game definitely looks like the sort of game that was designed for mobile devices and then ported up to home consoles. The backgrounds are kind of sparse, the resolution isn’t that great, and the character models look like they come from the Xbox 360 and PS3 era.
Nevertheless, the gameplay is solid and it’s still being designed to run on the Switch’s portable mode, so obviously it wasn’t going to be anywhere near as big or as visually expansive as some other fighting games out there like Injustice 2 or Street Fighter V. Then again, NetherRealm Studios is working with Shiver Entertainment to release Mortal Kombat 11 on the Switch and it doesn’t look like a mobile port, so I guess it just depends on the developer and how well they can squeeze some cycles out of the Switch’s hardware.
Anyway, you can look for Power Rangers: Battle For The Grid to launch on PS4, Xbox One, Steam, and Switch starting this spring.
