Sega Genesis Mini Will Have 40 Games, Launches In September

Sega is prepping a micro-console of its own based on the classic Genesis hardware, boasting 40 games for $79.99. The console is due out this September, with preorders information expected in the not-too-distant future.

These micro-consoles have been pretty hit or miss. By that, I of course mean that the minuscule Nintendo offerings were instant hits, while Sony’s PlayStation remake was a swing and a miss. It was considered too expensive and boasted too few games (and many that were included/missing were real head-scratchers), so those things went on sale almost immediately.

The Sega Genesis Mini invites everyone to “join the 16-bit revolution” with a gloriously retro box art that shows off the tiny version of the console and a pair of controllers.

Set to arrive on Sept. 19, we actually don’t yet have a full list of the 40 games that will be included on the machine. We know that Sonic the Hedgehog will be in the mix, along with Ecco the Dolphin, Castlevania: Bloodlines, Space Harrier II, Shining Force, Dr. Robotnik’s Mean Bean Machine, ToeJam & Earl, Comix Zone, Altered Beast and Gunstar Heroes. With only a quarter of the games announced so far, the Sega Genesis Mini is already looking like a winner.

Along with the console and controllers, the package will ship with an HDMI cable, power cable and adapter. The final product will be about half the size of the original Sega Genesis Model 1.

While similar consoles have launched in the past, it’s important to note that Sega is actually more heavily involved in the production of the Sega Genesis Mini, with the talented team at M2 working on the software. So while those previous mini Sega consoles might not have turned out all that great, we’ve got higher expectations for this new offering.

So now that you’ve got the basics, what other games would you like to see make the final cut?
