Banjo-Kazooie, Dragon Quest Heroes Coming To Smash Bros. Ultimate

The Nintendo Direct for E3 2019 was packed with trailers and reveals, including two new characters for the Switch’s top brawler, Smash Bros. Ultimate. Get ready to punch Mario in the face as either a hero from the Dragon Quest series or the dynamic duo of Banjo-Kazooie.

One of the best things about Smash is how it literally smashes a whole bunch of game worlds together. On top of a wide range of Nintendo characters, we’ve got representation from everyone from Capcom and Sega to Konami and Square Enix. The two characters (or nearly a dozen, depending on how you count) revealed during the Nintendo Direct on June 11 keeps that tradition going, introducing yet another Square Enix character and even an Xbox mascot from the team at Rare.

The E3 Direct opened with a scene of Link fighting a bunch of possessed characters from Smash and, in short order, the protagonist from Dragon Quest 11 jumps in to save the day. That’s all well and good, but then a bunch of other series protagonists start showing up. It looks like their move sets will be identical but, still, one DLC character will let you play as a whole cast of DQ fighters. Here’s the trailer.

The Dragon Quest DLC hits Smash sometime this summer. You can grab it by itself or get the DLC season pass that includes five characters total, starting with the recently released Joker from Persona 5.

Starting the Direct with Smash was a good idea, but then Nintendo decided to drop in a second DLC reveal for good measure. Given the fact that Banjo-Kazooie comes from the team at Rare, it’s fitting that the duo’s reveal is accompanied by a teaser featuring characters from another series of theirs, Donkey Kong Country.

Banjo-Kazooie will join the roster this fall, presumably leaving the fourth character for Winter 2019 and the fifth and final character for Spring 2020.
