Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway Teaser Trailer Revives A Story 30 Years In The Making

Sunrise Corporation’s Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway is a movie 30 years in the making, based on the highly acclaimed manga series from Yoshiyuki Tomino. The movie is actually a follow-up to Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack that featured Amuro and Char; the new teaser trailer strings fans into a short collection of images unraveling a story of intrigue and political unrest, while set within a future where giant, sleek looking robots do battle.

The teaser trailer doesn’t do much but as reported by Bounding Into Comics, we do get to see a brief glimpse of the new main protagonist, Hathaway Noa, and the deuterogonists Kenneth Sleg and Gigi Andulcia.

You can check out the minute long teaser below, courtesy of Gundam Info.

The story follows Noa as he joins a militant group to fight back against the corruption found within the Earth Federation. Obviously, Noa will meet opposition as he utilizes the prototype RX-105 “Xi” Gundam to take down senior officials of the Earth Federation, in hopes of trying to create a better society through terrorism.

I have to say, I actually prefer the animations and aesthetic from the original Mobile Suit Gundam: Char’s Counterattack.

Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway - Stewardess

There was a grittiness to the original animation due to the art being hand-drawn on physical celluloid, giving it that honest touch of artistry. Everything felt a little more impactful back then.

The cleanliness of the colors and lines, as well as the implementation of CGI for the Gundams really takes away from the general appeal of the anime, but that’s just me.

Back to the main subject at hand, you’ll be able to check out Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway starting July 23rd, 2020 in Japan with a limited theatrical release. Expect it to make the rounds in the West with dubs (for better or for worse, but usually for the worse) either in late 2020 or 2021.
