The Harvest, Team-Based Hero Shooter Early Access Announced For Steam

The Breach Studios announced that they have a new game in the works called The Harvest. 30 players will enter into a battlefield in teams of three, fighting to take control of the arena as the play-area shrinks in size like a typical Battle Royale game. The last team remaining is the one who wins the match.

Throughout the match players will be able to loot and harvest from their fallen opponents, with an in-match progression system that allows you to upgrade and modify your abilities during the round.

The game’s announcement was accompanied by an announcement trailer showcasing how some of the gameplay mechanics work, you can check it out below.

The obvious gimmick for The Harvest is that the arenas are large and spacious enough so that there’s an almost constant-mobility factor involved with either dodging incoming fire or trying to position yourself to get the drop on an enemy before they get the drop on you.

The projectile fire looks terminally slow, though, and as you can see in the trailer it takes a lot of precision forward aiming or predictive positioning to make long-range kill-shots.

You can tell that they obviously took a lot of inspiration from Overwatch, but instead of tapping into the Pixar-style aesthetic they decided to go with more otherworldly designs for the characters.

It’s a shame because this would have been a perfect opportunity to catch the attention of a wider audience with waifu-bait female characters, but they obviously don’t want a lot of money or attention, so they opted for some xenocentric designs.

Beyond the rollerblading-style approach to traversal, there’s not much here that really renders The Harvest in any different light than the dozen or so other team-based shooters already on the market.

30-player battles is a nice upgrade from the tired and passe 16-player centric maps, but it’s still a far cry from other 100-player Battle Royale games already on the market.

I’m not really sure what The Breach Studios is doing with the game in terms of originality or what corner of the market they’re aiming for that hasn’t already been occupied by bigger and more ambitious outings, but The Harvest is scheduled to enter into Early Access on Steam.

They plan on starting with four playable characters, each with a single weapon, and there are plans to branch out from there. Additional modes, features, and gameplay options are expected to make the cut leading up to a tentative 2021 release.
