Reggie Fils-Aime Joins GameStop’s Board of Directors

After making waves with his announcement that he was departing Nintendo in February of 2019, Reggie Fils-Aime went dark. We didn’t hear anything from the gaming hulkster until he reappeared again like a turtle rearing its head from its shell, only to announce that he had joined GameStop.

Not only did he team up with GameStop, but he’s on their board of directors.

The news came courtesy of a tweet from Reggie’s official Twitter account on March 9th, 2020.

The tweet links to the GameStop page, where the company formally announced that Reggie was being joined by Bill Simon and J.K. Symancyk, with the trio aiming to usher in a new era for the struggling gaming company.

GameStop CEO George Sherman used the opportunity to prop up the three as being a catalyst for finally turning around their dire financial misfortunes, saying…

“[…] We are pleased to welcome Reggie, Bill and J.K. to the Board. They are each highly qualified and bring significant, relevant experience to our turnaround. We look forward to immediately benefitting from their expertise and perspectives as we navigate the evolving gaming and retail environments, execute on our strategic initiatives and prepare the Company to maximize value-creation associated with the next generation of console launches later this year.”

So long as they don’t start showing up at Pride parades or basing their entire business model on loot boxes, I don’t see how they could end up doing worse than they are.

I imagine Reggie and the other two will attempt to convince GameStop to focus on digital distribution or making connections with companies for some sort of game streaming service, since that’s the pot of gold that every company and their mother has been chasing these days.

In any case, Reggie decided to leave the Big ‘N’ to chase a dream at GameStop.
