The ESA Announces Plans For “Reimagined” E3 To Take Place In 2021

It looks like plans for the next E3 are already in motion, despite the coronavirus wiping out the physical portion of this year’s games event. Nevertheless, The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) believes that next June will be “safe enough” to kick-off the annual Electronic Entertainment Expo.

Despite the current and ongoing pandemic that is sweeping across multiple mediums and industries, resulting in cancellations, much like with E3’s physical portion, it looks like the ESA has plans for the games event to appear in the mid-part of June 2021.

Although it’s unclear if E3 2020 will still appear this year as a digital-only show, what we do know is that June 15th, 2021, stands as the official launch for the next E3.

The above information comes from website gamesindustry.biz, which received a letter from the ESA detailing what might go down as of next year.

Moreover, it’s unclear what next year’s event will focus on, given that the theme for it is “reimagining E3.” Does this mean that the ESA and its partners will reimagine the canceled E3 2020, or does it mean that E3 will be reimagined in that it will no longer be a physical event but a digital one? As it stands now, it’s too early to tell.

In the meantime, while we wait for answers, the website reports that IGN will host a “Summer of Gaming” event during the early part of June. This event revolving around video games, publishers, and developers will include partnerships with Square Enix, Sega, Bandai Namco, Amazon, Google, Twitter, Devolver Digital, and THQ Nordic.

As a clarification, the IGN summer event that will supposedly take the place of E3 2020 will happen this year and not in 2021.

So what does this all mean? Well, it means that E3 2020 may or may not happen digitally this year, IGN will have a summer event that will happen early this June, while E3 2021 will be a “reimagined” showcase.
