Hotshot Racing, Virtua Racing-Inspired Racer Accepting Beta Sign-Ups

One of the most highly anticipated racing games set to come out for home consoles and PC is Lucky Mountain Games’ Hotshot Racing, previously known as Racing Apex. Beta sign-ups went live in early July, and they’re still live right now if you were interested in getting in some gameplay time with the low-poly, high-fun arcade racing title.

You can sign-up for the beta over on the official Lucky Mountain Games website.

If you need a quick recap of what the gameplay is like, you can check out the 23 minute video below from Alpha Beta Gamer.

The gameplay is a throwback to Sega’s Virtua Racing Deluxe on the Sega 32X.

Obviously the big difference is that Hotshot Racing actually runs at 60 frames per second, instead of the 15-20fps of the old Sega title.

The presentation of Hotshot Racing is a lot closer to the likes of Daytona USA, especially with the announcer and music.

I noticed, however, that the game’s damage system has been removed (or turned off) in the video above. If you check the older videos for Hotshot Racing back when it was known as Racing Apex, they demonstrated various types of damage to the cars.

Hopefully it’s just for the beta where the damage is no longer present, but the full thing will return the damage systems from the previous builds.

One thing we do get to see in the newer build is the ability to customize the vehicle with a variety of cosmetic and performance enhancements. The various upgrades will allow you to modify how the vehicle performs on the track, from boosting to drifting, and from handling to acceleration. The general gist is that you have to drift to build the boost meter and boost to stay in the lead, so there’s a constant ebb and flow with how you attack the track and what style of racing you prefer.

Hotshot Racing is scheduled to release for the Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PS4, and PC.
