After Take-Two, Ubisoft, and Capcom expressed interest in price hikes next-gen, it looks like EA — who is on the Traitors of America master list — has joined the fray and is considering raising its video game prices when the PS5 and Xbox Series X rolls around.
As noted before, Ubisoft is considering raising its video game prices in the foreseeable future. Although it won’t happen this generation or early on next-gen, Ubisoft is thinking about a price hike from $59.99 to something else.
Moreover, the conversation that got Ubisoft to consider a price hike next-gen can be attributed to 2K and Visual Concepts announcing NBA 2K21 being more expensive for PS5 and Xbox Series X.
Furthermore, during Capcom’s most recent investor call, the company did not shoot down the idea of raising prices when asked about the ever-growing topic that Take-Two and Ubisoft helped propel.
With that said, website tweaktown.com managed to extract the following excerpt from Andrew Wilson, EA’s CEO, during the company’s Q1 Fiscal Year 21 report:
“We start with the player motivations, the expectations the players have around depth and breadth of live service, and we go from there
We’ve already announced plans to transition free of charge from current-gen to next-gen. We’ll also have innovations of Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5. What players asked for was the smoothest possible transition.
We’ll continue looking at the prices as time goes on.”
In other words, EA is looking at player motivations, the expectations that players have around live-service mechanics, and from there, the company will gauge what people think of next-gen price hikes.
Although EA will allow gamers to transition free of charge from current-gen to next-gen, the company will still focus on microtransactions and possible higher-priced games moving forward.
Anyway, expect more companies to come out of the woodwork when it comes to considering price hikes next-gen, which will likely range from double-A to triple-A studios pumping out games of the same quality (if not lower) with higher price tags.
