Cyanide Studios and Focus Home Interactive’s Call of Cthulhu for Xbox One, PS4, and Steam was a real mind-trip when it released back in the fall of 2018. The game was one of the more highly anticipated Lovecraftian titles to come out in recent times alongside Frogwares’ The Sinking City, which was published by Bigben Interactive. While both games had their pros and cons, I think Call of Cthulhu felt a little more immersive and authentic to the Lovecraft experience, despite its linear design and almost walking sim-esque approach to the gameplay. Narrative adventure. Walking simulator. First person adventure game. Whatever you choose to call games like Call of Cthulhu, the genre is only increasing in popularity. Regardless of the reason for this upturn, it’s a style of game that seems to link perfectly with horror and mystery games because of how helpless it tends to make the player feel. Just as importantly though, it’s a slower paced style of game that seems to suit smaller studios with limited production budgets and a real focus on story and dialogue.
