This came after a tumultuous media blitz during the 2016 election season, where the media labeled him as a racist, sexist, Trump supporter, and smeared him and his girlfriend in a concentrated attempt to cost him his job and reputation in the public sphere. After media outlets aligned with former Presidential hopeful, Hillary Clinton, organized a smear campaign against Oculus co-founder Palmer Luckey back in September, 2016, the techno-guru mostly disappeared from the public eye. Gizmodo attempted to start a harassment campaign against him and his then girlfriend – a supporter of #GamerGate and current President of the United States, Donald Trump– but she ended up deleting her Twitter account to avoid harassment. Gizmodo Attacking #GamerGate Supporter Was Not Ethical, According To SPJ President

A Twitter user directly reached out to the new president of the Society of Professional Journalists, Lynn Walsh, asking about whether or not it was ethical for a site like Gizmodo to drag Palmer Luckey’s girlfriend – a proponent for ethics in journalism and a #GamerGate supporter – into a story where they smeared Luckey for funding a troll PAC. Walsh simply replied that bringing in family and friends to a story that has nothing to do with them is not ethical.
